Pilot-Scale Coke Oven

CONSOL R&D's pilot-scale coke oven offers a design that replicates operating conditions found in commercial coke ovens. This oven serves as the primary tool for technical support to CONSOL R&D customers and is used extensively for coke oven research.

The coke oven is a constant flue-heated Bethlehem movable-wall oven that takes a charge of approximately 700 pounds. The oven is equipped to continuously measure the maximum coke oven wall pressure and internal gas pressure developed during the carbonization process and produces sufficient coke for the physical and chemical tests pertinent to coke making.

Prior to placing a coal charge in the oven, it's blended in CONSOL R&D's blending facility to ensure a homogeneous mixture.

Tests can be performed in the coke oven to:

  • Optimize coal blends
  • Evaluate the effect on resultant coke stability and coking pressure caused by variations in coal blend proportions, moisture content, charge bulk density, charge pulverization level, and coking rate.
  • Precise operation and monitoring equipment and instrumentation ensures the customer that test conditions can be properly maintained.
  • Specific coking problems, encountered by a customer, can be evaluated in the test oven and solutions developed thereby minimizing costly testing in commercial coke ovens or coking units.
